Lekholm DM48X Review – A MIDI Harmonica That Can Become Almost Any Instrument

The Lekholm DM48X is one of the most interesting products to appear in the harmonica world for years. It's described by Lekholm as "an expressive alternative to MIDI keyboards", giving harmonica players a way to control software instruments using familiar harmonica technique rather than piano keys.
For me, that's a huge part of the appeal. I can't really play keyboards so the idea of recording orchestral instruments, saxophones, brass or strings using harmonica technique is immediately attractive.
I'm including two videos with this article. The first is my hands-on review of the Lekholm DM48X itself, while the second looks more closely at the Audio Modeling SWAM instruments, which I think are among the best software pairings for this controller.
What is the Lekholm DM48X?
The first thing to understand is that the Lekholm DM48X is not actually a harmonica.
There are no reeds inside so it produces no sound on its own. Instead, it's a MIDI harmonica - a controller that sends performance data to a synthesiser or virtual instrument, much like a MIDI keyboard, electronic drum kit or electronic wind instrument. What makes it different is that, instead of learning piano, you play using harmonica technique. It reads which holes you're playing, whether you're blowing or drawing, and how hard you're breathing.
In effect, it's twelve wind controllers combined into one compact instrument.

First impressions
The DM48X arrives with a sturdy carrying case and USB cable (though you can also play wirelessly) and the instrument itself feels reassuringly well made. The built-in display and menu system make it easy to change settings directly on the instrument without constantly reaching for your computer. Everything feels purpose-built rather than experimental which is reassuring for a product that's doing something genuinely new.
The story behind the DM48X
The instrument was developed by Professor Erik Lekholm at the University of Gothenburg. Erik studied engineering and electronics before becoming a harmonica player. Originally he and his father began developing the technology simply as a way to practise silently. The project eventually evolved into a sophisticated digital harmonica capable of controlling almost any MIDI instrument.
Brendan Power, one of the first players involved with testing the instrument, has also contributed a great deal to its development and has produced some excellent demonstration videos.
This isn't actually the first version of the instrument. An earlier model appeared around a decade ago but the current DM48X is a major step forward, adding wireless operation, a ribbon controller for bends and modulation and a redesigned slide mechanism that feels much closer to a real chromatic harmonica.
Interestingly, it's also part of a much longer history. There have been previous attempts at electronic harmonicas - including the Millioniser 2000 from the 1980s - but nothing that's reached this level of sophistication.
Wireless connection
One of the nicest improvements is Bluetooth connectivity. You can play wirelessly, which makes the whole setup much cleaner, although Lekholm recommend using USB when recording to minimise latency and avoid possible data bottlenecks.
I'll admit the Bluetooth pairing took me longer than it should have. On my Mac I initially expected it to appear in the normal Bluetooth menu, but the connection is actually made through Apple's Audio MIDI Setup utility instead.
Battery life is quoted at around five hours of wireless playing, which should comfortably cover rehearsals, practice sessions or most live performances.

Does it actually feel like playing a harmonica?
Surprisingly, yes. The DM48X is designed to replicate a chromatic harmonica, with a look and hole spacing like that of the Hohner CX12.
The holes are slightly smaller, and the slide has a shallower movement than a traditional chromatic, but after a few minutes it feels remarkably familiar.
Bending and expression
Naturally, one of the biggest questions for diatonic players is bending. Traditional reed bending doesn't exist here because, of course, there are no reeds. Instead, bends can be triggered by stronger blows or draws, with adjustable sensitivity and threshold settings.
The real star is the ribbon controller, operated with your left index finger. This can control bends and vibrato. Since you're no longer limited by the physical behaviour of reeds, the bend range can be edited if you want. Like many things on the DM48X, it's highly configurable.
Polyphony
One cool feature of the DM48X is the ability to play chords. Polyphony can be enabled or disabled depending on how you want to play. If you're mainly playing melody lines, you may prefer to switch it off to avoid accidental extra notes. If you want richer textures, assisted polyphony settings allow you to control exactly how much breath pressure is needed before additional notes are introduced. And because you can change the tuning, your chord options are basically endless.

Tunings, slide options and range
This is one of the areas where the Lekholm DM48X becomes genuinely exciting. It ships configured in standard chromatic (solo) tuning, but changing tuning is simply a menu option.
There are eighteen tuning configuration slots available and those tunings can be pretty much anything you can imagine.
The slide interval can also be changed. Instead of raising every note by a semitone, you could make it a whole tone, a third, a fifth or even an octave. You could also make the slide lower rather than raise the note. Additional buttons can also be assigned to alter pitch, creating new possibilities for ornaments and grace notes.
Combined with octave transposition, you effectively have access to an enormous playing range without changing instruments.
All of this can be edited using the games console-esque controls and the small digital display on the unit itself. You might find the display a bit small if your eyesight isn't great, but it's the gateway to an amazing range of options.
Software matters
One thing quickly became obvious. The free synth sounds in GarageBand (Apple's free audio workstation) don't really do the instrument justice. Most end up sounding like fairly dated 1980s keyboards. The digital harmonica really comes alive when paired with good wind-instrument synthesis. That's why I'm also including a separate video looking specifically at Audio Modeling's SWAM instruments (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, flute, violin and more). They respond beautifully to breath control and make the experience feel much closer to playing a real acoustic instrument.
Hardware synthesisers work perfectly well too if that's your preferred setup. If your goal is simply to recreate a harmonica sound, there are also chromatic harmonica virtual instruments available, although personally I think the real excitement lies in using the DM48X to become something entirely different.

Why I would use the DM48X
For me, the biggest attraction isn't replacing a harmonica. It's expanding what I can record. The harmonica synth concept suddenly lets me perform saxophones, brass, strings, orchestral instruments, banjos and countless other sounds using technique I already know.
It's also excellent for:
silent practice through headphones
late-night recording without disturbing neighbours
studio layering
live performance with a laptop or iPad
instant transposition into any key
avoiding reed maintenance and fatigue entirely
Is the Lekholm DM48X expensive?
Compared with a standard chromatic harmonica, yes. It costs several times more than a conventional instrument. On the other hand, comparing it to a normal harmonica probably isn't the right comparison. It's really a specialist MIDI controller with extensive custom hardware and software, capable of replacing an entire collection of instruments and tunings. From my conversations with Lekholm, I genuinely don't think this is a product carrying huge profit margins. That doesn't change the purchase price, of course, but it does explain why it's positioned where it is. At the time of writing, Lekholm have also told me that readers who contact them via the Lekholm website and mention my review will be offered a special discount for a limited time.
Final thoughts
The biggest surprise for me is how addictive the DM48X is. Erik Lekholm mentioned on the Happy Hour Harmonica Podcast that many experienced players at NAMM had exactly the same reaction. They've spent decades developing their harmonica technique, and suddenly that same technique can produce completely different instruments. That's a genuinely exciting feeling.
Even though I'm primarily a diatonic player, I can already see plenty of uses for the Lekholm DM48X in recording projects. I don't expect it to replace traditional harmonicas - I wouldn't want it to - but it opens creative possibilities that simply didn't exist before.
If you've ever wished you could play orchestral instruments, brass, woodwind or synthesisers without having to learn them, this MIDI harmonica is well worth investigating.
