Hello! In today's free harmonica lesson we'll look at what to do when your harmonica notes are not playing properly.
Learning the harmonica is mostly a joyful experience, but it can quickly become frustrating for a beginner harmonica player when your harmonica notes are not working properly. You might find some notes sound weak, muffled, or don’t play at all. I've experienced all of these myself as a harmonica player.
If your harmonica won’t play the way it should, don’t worry. This guide will help you understand why this happens and what you can do to fix it.
Here's a free YouTube video lesson on avoiding 'broken' harmonica notes. You can watch the video and/or read on to get my top tips.
What to Do if Your Harmonica Notes are Not Working:
The good news is that your so-called 'broken' harmonica is probably not broken at all. It's likely all about refining your technique and taking good care of your instrument. With that in mind, here is my advice if you find that some notes on your harmonica are not playing properly.
Stay Relaxed and Keep Your Hands Loose
One of the most common reasons for harmonica notes not working is tension. If you hold your harmonica too tightly or force the air through the harp, the notes can sound choked or fail to play. Instead, keep your hands and lips relaxed. Remember the following:
Drop your shoulders and keep your neck and cheeks relaxed.
Avoid gripping the harp tightly or pressing too hard against your lips.
Breathe naturally and blow or draw air smoothly without forcing it.
This relaxed approach helps the reeds inside the harmonica vibrate freely, producing clear notes. Forcing air can damage the reeds or cause them to stick, leading to a broken harmonica sound.
Get Your Embouchure Right
Your embouchure is the way you shape your mouth around the harmonica. A poor embouchure can cause notes to sound off or not play at all. Beginners often struggle with this, but it improves with practice. Follow these tips:
Keep your lips resting loosely on the instrument. Do not purse hard.
Place the harmonica deep inside your mouth. This opens your airway and encourages efficient breathing..
Practising simple single-note exercises can help you develop a clean embouchure. If your harmonica notes are not working, experiment with small adjustments to your mouth until the sound improves.
Store Your Harmonica Properly
A harmonica is a delicate instrument that needs proper care. Storing it incorrectly can cause moisture buildup, dust, or damage to the reeds, which leads to a broken or problematic harmonica sound. Here's what to do:
After playing, tap out excess moisture by gently tapping the harmonica on your palm.
Store it in a clean, dry case or pouch.
Avoid leaving it in hot or humid places, such as inside a car or near a heater.
Proper storage extends the life of your harmonica and keeps the notes working smoothly.

Avoid Eating or Drinking Before and During Playing
Food particles and sticky residues can clog the harmonica’s reeds, causing notes to fail or sound muffled. Drinking sugary or acidic beverages before playing can also leave residues inside the instrument. To avoid this, make sure to:
Rinse your mouth with water before playing. If you have time, brush your teeth thoroughly.
Avoid eating or drinking anything other than water right before or during playing.
Clean your harmonica regularly by wiping the outside and gently blowing air through it. Check out my lesson on How to Clean a Harmonica, or you might like to check out my Ultimate Guide to Cleaning and Maintaining your Harmonica
Use a Good Quality Harmonica
Not all harmonicas are created equal. Cheap or poorly made harmonicas often have reeds that don't play well, and the instrument as a whole may be very unresponsive which encourages poor technique. Investing in a good quality harmonica can save you a lot of trouble.
If your harmonica notes are not working and you are using a low-quality instrument, upgrading to a model like the Hohner Special 20 can make a big difference. It is a popular choice among beginners and professionals alike. Here are some Amazon links (I receive a small commission - at no cost to you - if you buy via one of these links):
When to Repair or Replace Your Harmonica
If you have tried all the tips above and your harmonica still won’t play properly, it might be time to consider repair or replacement. First, check if any reeds are bent or stuck: sometimes reeds can be carefully adjusted or cleaned. If your harmonica is old or heavily damaged, replacement might be the best option.
Sending your harmonica back to the manufacturer should be a last resort, because the problem is almost certainly down to poor technique. However, a trusted repair specialist can bring even very out-of-shape harmonicas back to life. Avoid trying to fix complex issues yourself unless you have experience, as this can cause further damage.

Final Thoughts on Harmonicas with Broken Notes
When your harmonica notes are not working, the problem often comes down to how you play and care for your instrument. Staying relaxed, using the right embouchure, storing your harmonica properly, and avoiding food or drink before playing are simple steps that improve sound immediately. Using a quality harmonica (like the Hohner Special 20) also helps prevent many common issues.
