'Lean On Me' is a beautiful song with a fascinating history. Inspired by small-town life, it written and recorded by Bill Withers and released in April 1972 on his second album, Still Bill. Withers grew up in a coal-mining town called Slab Fork in West Virginia, where neighbours helped each other out. After moving to the big city of Los Angeles, he missed that sense of community, which inspired him to write the song. Lean On Me won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1987 when re-recorded by Club Nouveau, and is one of only nine songs to hit No. 1 twice. In 2015, it was added to the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
