VERSE:

-3     5      5   5       -5      6   6    6      5      -4    -4    -4  -3    -4

An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day

-3  5  5     5      -5     6  6   6  -6     -7   -7  -7   6    -7

Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way

Ploughing through the ragged sky, and up the cloudy draw

Yippie yi ooh

5  5  5  5 (-3  3)  -3

Yippie yi yay

Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen

Tabbed for Lee Oskar Melody Maker Harmonica

-3          -4       -4     -4   -4   5   5      5

I       heard there was a secret chord

-3      -4   -4      -4        -4   -4       5      5       5

That David played  and it pleased the Lord

  -4    5         5     5  5     5     -4   -4  -3    -4    -4

But you don't really care for music, do you

-3   -4     -4    -4     -4     5           5   -5

It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth

-4      6   6     6     6     6   6    -6

The minor fall, the major lift

  6     -6  -6    -6     -6   -7   -7    -7  -6  -6    6

The baffled king composing Ha-le-lu-jah

-3  -4  5  5        5  -4  -3  -3

Hallelujah      Hallelujah

 -3  -4  5  5      5   -4   -3  4 -3  3 -2  -2

Hallelujah      Ha-lle-lu-u-u-u-u-jah

-3        -4      -4      -4      -4      -4     5      5      5

Your faith was strong but you needed proof

 -3     -4   -4    -4    -4    5       5     5

You saw her bathing on the roof

  -4     5   5      5     5      5      -4       -4   -3    5    -3

Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya

-3     -4    -4   -4    -4    5      5       -5

She tied you to her kitchen chair

-4      -4         6      6        6          6       6    6     6      -6

And she broke your throne and she cut your hair

 6       -6      -6      -6    -6     -7      -7    -7  -6   -6    6

And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

-3  -4  5  5        5  -4  -3  -3

Hallelujah      Hallelujah

 -3  -4  5  5      5   -4   -3  4 -3  3 -2  -2

Hallelujah      Ha-lle-lu-u-u-u-u-jah

Oba, oba-serving the hypocrites

-4  -4  -4 -4   -4    -3        -3        4     -4  -4     6    -5     5

I  am just a poor boy though my story's seldom told

5    5        5        -4     -4     5   -4     3

I have squandered my resistance

 3   -3   4   4    4   4     4     -3       -2      3    4   -3   -3

For a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises

6     6      -5    6

All lies and jest

   6      6      6       -5       -5    -5     -5     5       5

Still the man hears what he wants to hear

   5      5   5     5    -4    -4

And disregards the rest

 6   6   6  -4  -5     -5   5  -4  5   6

(Humming)

6   -5   6

Lie la lie

 6   6   6  -5  -5 5  -4

Lie la lie la lie la lie

 6  -5   6

Lie la lie

-6  -7  7  -7  -6  6 -6      6  6  6  -5  6

Lie la LA la lie la lie      la la la la lie

INTRO (x2):

-6  6  -5  5

-8  7  -7 -6

6  -5  5  -4

VERSE:

 -4   5     -5   6    -3

I don't wanna talk

-3   4      -4         5          5         -4

About things we've gone through

   -4          4    -3   3      4

Though it's hurting me

  -4      4   -3   3   4

Now it's history

    -4      5      -5    6     -3

I've played all my cards

   -3      4         -4         5         5      -4

And that's what you've done too

  -4     4      -3     3    4

Nothing more to say

   -4     4    -3    3     4

No more ace to play

CHORUS:

-4     -4    7      7     -7    -7

The winner takes it all

  -3   -3 -6     -6     6         6

The loser's standing small

  5    5   -8  -8   7   7

Beside the victory

     7     -7     -6  -7  7

That's her destiny

Why Learn With Melody Maker Tabs?

The Melody Maker harmonica is different from a standard diatonic because of its altered tuning, which can give songs a fresh, expressive sound. Tabs are particularly useful because:

  • They tell you which holes to play and in what order.

  • They allow you to practice melodies without sheet music.

  • They’re perfect for learning songs quickly and building confidence.

Even if you’re used to a standard 10-hole harmonica, learning on the Melody Maker will expand your musical range and open up new possibilities for riffs, licks, and improvisation.

How to Use These Tabs

  1. Check that you are using a Melody Maker harmonica – These tabs will only work with this specific tuning.

  2. Start slow – Play each note carefully before trying to speed up.

  3. Practice regularly – Short, focused sessions are better than long, inconsistent ones.

  4. Combine with listening – Play along with the original song if you know it, or use your ear to match the melody.

Pro tip: If a song feels tricky, loop small sections until your breath gets comfortable.

Tips for Learning Melody Maker Songs

  • Breathe naturally – Good airflow is key to a smooth tone.

  • Start with simple songs – Focus on accuracy first, speed will come later.

  • Jam with backing tracks – Even without a band, you can simulate real musical environments.

Melody Maker Note Layout: What’s Different?

Like other Lee Oskar harps, the Melody Maker looks like a standard 10-hole diatonic from the outside. Inside, though, the reed layout is slightly altered. the Melody Maker is designed so the major scale falls naturally in 2nd position (starting on 2 draw). Three reeds are tuned differently compared to Richter: the 3 blow, 5 draw and 9 draw notes. Find out more in my Free Guide to the Lee Oskar Melody Maker harmonica.
