The harmonica has become an integral part of country music. The most famous country harmonica player are probably Charlie McCoy, who has recorded and performed with Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette and many more; and Mickey Raphael, who has toured with Willie Nelson for over fifty years. But there are loads more great country harmonica players. I hope this article will help you discover even more. Here are (in no particular order) my top 10 country harmonica players.


Charlie McCoy

Mickey Raphael

Buddy Greene

DeFord Bailey

DeFord Bailey was an early virtuoso of solo harmonica performance in the United States. He was also an integral part of the early Grand Ole Opry and one of its first star performers on radio and on tour across the country.


Jelly Roll Johnson

Jelly Roll Johnson has appeared on over 60 Gold- and Platinum-selling albums, plus three Grammy-winning albums. In 1998 he won the Nashville Music Award for Best Wind Instrumentalist and has twice won the best Specialty Instrument Award from the Academy of Country Music.


Terry McMillan

Terry McMillan’s energetic performances and expressive tone made him a standout session player in Nashville. He is known for his dynamic country and gospel playing.


Todd Parrott

Humphrey Bate

Humphrey Bate was the first musician to play old-time music on the radio in the Nashville area with his string band, Dr Humphrey Bate & His Possum Hunters.


Wayne Raney

Wayne Raney's distinctive country harmonica playing had an important role in early country music, contributing to radio and studio recordings in the mid-twentieth century.


Don Brooks

Dallas TX native Don Brooks become a member of Waylon Jennings' backing band in the early 1970s. In New York he became a respected session guy, recording with Billy Joel, the Bee Gees, Yoko Ono, Talking Heads and Diana Ross.

This list is just an introduction to some of the best country harmonica players, but these days there are many more musicians incorporating harmonica into their performances, including Ryan Bingham, Clint Black, Evan Felker, Heidi Newfield, Ryan Koenig, Martina McBride, Parker McCollum and Chris Janson.
