When Liam invited me to write a piece for this website about female harmonica players, I jumped at the chance to contribute. Why? Well I'd have to admit that when I started playing in 2020, I soon wondered if I was the only woman out there. We were in Covid times then so I was mostly learning online at home, but still, I felt I wasn't really seeing many people like me taking up this wonderful instrument.
Five years on, I actually feel very differently. And I'm delighted that I do. I got myself out to some blues jams (Liam actually came to support me at my first one), and I met a few other female players, now friends. I also attended some harmonica events, where I got to meet a few more women, including some real stars of the harmonica world too.
Of course, we are still in the minority in reality, but things really are changing. And that's a great thing.
Anyway, the harmonica world is full of incredible talent all round, but know that female harmonica players have been part of shaping the sound of blues, folk, rock, and modern music.
From early pioneers to rising stars, this guide brings together more than 50 of the best female harmonica players - whether they're full-time harp specialists, enthusiastic developing musicians, or artists who use the instrument in their own unique way. Let's celebrate the women playing this traditionally male-dominated instrument.

One of my personal favourites, Julia is from the USA and is an official Hohner artist. She sings and plays guitar and harmonica, with her band Sweetwater Holler. She even writes her own songs. She plays blues and country music. She’s always encouraging up-and-coming players.
LC Williams

Patricia Marcoux
Patricia is from Quebec, Canada. She plays piano, violin and harmonica. She really is an all rounder and her YouTube channel shows her amazing talents and diversity of playing. Check it out!
Elin Oberg
Elin "Luffar Lo" Oberg is a harmonica player from Sweden. She plays in the Root Rock band AMONG LYNX, the all-female blues band Ladies Got the Blues and the duo Root Imperial.

An Argentine harmonica player who began studying music at a young age and went on to perform widely. She has trained with top players and is often described as one of the leading harmonica players in her region.

A blues harmonica player from Buenos Aires and part of the South American collective Mulheres Gaitistas, helping represent women in the blues harmonica scene internationally.
Kiersi Joli
Another young and super talented all round musician. And a Hohner artist. I first met her in a class with her tutor Ronnie Shellist.

🕰️ Lesser-Known Female Harmonica Players of History
These players may not be widely known today, but they played an important role in the development of harmonica music:
Mildred Mulcay
One half of husband-wife duo The Mulcays, who were the first pop harmonica group to use amplifiers. Mildred was one of the first women to play harmonica professionally, toured around the world and appeared on TV and in film.
Grace Brim
Sometimes called the Queen of the Harmonica, Grace recorded with her husland John Brim. She had raw, gospel-influenced vocal and harp delivery.
The Harmonicuties
The Harmonicuties were an all-female novelty band boasting a little person among other things. Sadly I can't find any footage of them!
Mary Travers
Mary Travers sang and also played violin, accordion, spoons and jaw harp. She became widely popular in French-speaking Canada under the stage name Madame Bolduc. Recording her first records in 1929, she may well have been the first woman to record on the harmonica.
Rebecca Tarwater
During the 1930s Tennessee folk singer and harmonica player made several recordings.

A Lee Oskar Featured Artist. I've seen her live and it was really excellent! She has a music career spanning over 35 years and she's played with some very famous artists all over the world.

She has an international reputation as a harmonica soloist, singer and composer. Ive seen her live too. It was incredible and we got to be taught by her at another event which was such an honour.
Katie Bradley
A great UK blues singer and harmonica player. Again, I've seen her live and was so inspired. A wonderful person too.
Catriona Sturton
A famous harmonica player from Canada. She plays harp but also sings and writes songs and plays in bands such as Plumtree.
Monique Couto
Monique is a Brazilian harmonica player and Hohner collaborator, known for her online performances in rock, pop, soul, and blues.
Rhonda Rucker
A versatile folk and blues musician who combines harmonica with vocals, banjo, and piano, and has released dozens of albums.
Octavia
