When Liam invited me to write a piece for this website about female harmonica players, I jumped at the chance to contribute. Why? Well I'd have to admit that when I started playing in 2020, I soon wondered if I was the only woman out there. We were in Covid times then so I was mostly learning online at home, but still, I felt I wasn't really seeing many people like me taking up this wonderful instrument.
Five years on, I actually feel very differently. And I'm delighted that I do. I got myself out to some blues jams (Liam actually came to support me at my first one), and I met a few other female players, now friends. I also attended some harmonica events, where I got to meet a few more women, including some real stars of the harmonica world too.
Of course, we are still in the minority in reality, but things really are changing. And that's a great thing.
Anyway, the harmonica world is full of incredible talent all round, but know that female harmonica players have been part of shaping the sound of blues, folk, rock, and modern music.
From early pioneers to rising stars, this guide brings together more than 50 of the best female harmonica players - whether they're full-time harp specialists, enthusiastic developing musicians, or artists who use the instrument in their own unique way. Let's celebrate the women playing this traditionally male-dominated instrument.
⭐ Top 10* Female Harmonica Players
If you're not sure where to start, these are ten of the most influential and inspiring players to check out first. I really need to caveat* that this is a list, a pointer for where to go first. It's not the definitive list (the good news is that there are way more than ten in reality!).

🚀 Females on the journey with me!
Since starting my harmonica journey in 2020, I’ve met some amazing women, some mentioned above already, and some others, here, that have been learning alongside me.
We all support one another! Watch out for these players who you will be hearing a lot more of in the future.
Paula Braynion - Started playing when I did in 2020. Plays in a band ‘The Leaping Frogs’ and is also a lifetime member of Liam's school. We’ve had the best fun at the events we attend. Learn more about Liam's school by clicking here.
Marie K Blues - From Netherlands. We came up together too and she helped me with improvisation when I didn't get it. She now plays in a few bands too. Amazing skills!
Pippa Probably - UK based. Plays a mean Chromatic harp and actually makes me think I may try it some day. We are both bird photographers too.
Sarah Quiver - My jam night harp sister who taught me all about amps and stage etiquette. Such a relief to have a pal when I first went to jams.
Nicole M Joubert - All the way from Canada. We seem to have developed our harp skills at the same time and always encourage one another. A cool improviser too.
Iana Laxer - Lives in Canada. Up and coming young harp player. Learning fast and sharing her progress on line. Quite the new talent.
There are lots of others too. Too many to mention. The point is, befriending these female counterparts from all over the world has been one of the surprise benefits of learning this lovely little instrument.
🎯 Final Thoughts
So, there you go. The world of female harmonica players is far richer and more diverse than many people realise.
