49 Minor Key Songs for Harmonica: Free Dark & Moody Harp Tabs

Updated: 6 days ago

White text "MINOR KEYS" on a cloudy, dark blue background, evoking a mysterious mood.

Hello! Most beginner harmonica players start with major key songs and classic 2nd position blues. But sooner or later, almost every player discovers the darker, moodier sound of minor key music.

Personally, I love minor keys. They can sound haunting, soulful, cinematic, mysterious, aggressive or deeply expressive depending on the style and position you use.

In this lesson, I'll give you load of free harmonica tabs to minor-key songs and some more information on how to get the best out of playing in minor keys.

Note: This is not an article on using a minor-tuned harmonica. We will be using different positions to access the minor scale using a standard (Richter-tuned) diatonic harmonica. If you'd like to take a different approach, I have a lesson on The Natural Minor-Tuned Harmonica

Why Minor Key Songs Sound Different

Major keys generally sound:

  • bright

  • uplifting

  • stable

Minor keys tend to sound:

  • darker

  • more dramatic

  • more introspective

That emotional difference is exactly why minor key harmonica playing is so powerful. Minor sounds are used everywhere, including in pop, rock, blues, jazz, folk, funk and classical.

And the harmonica is incredibly expressive in these settings when you understand the right positions.

What Positions Are Best for Minor Key Harmonica?

While you can force minor sounds out of almost any position, certain positions naturally fit minor playing far better than others.

The most common are:

Position

Common Feel

Typical Use

3rd Position

Dark, bluesy, modal

Minor blues, jazz, funk

4th Position

Natural minor sound

Easy melodies, folk, cinematic music

5th Position

Exotic, tense, dramatic

Advanced blues and modal playing

Each position has its own personality and emotional flavour. Most of the tabs in this lesson are written for 3rd or 4th position.

To learn more about positions, check out my Free Positions Guide

3rd Position: The Most Popular Minor Position

3rd position is usually the first minor-oriented position harmonica players learn. On a C harmonica, 3rd position puts you in D minor. One of the reasons players love 3rd position is that the layout naturally supports expressive bends and melodic phrasing. The 4 draw becomes an important root note and the middle octave feels incredibly fluid for improvisation. A huge amount of modern blues harmonica is played in 3rd position. Players like Jason Ricci, Howard Levy, and Carlos del Junco have all explored the incredible expressive possibilities of 3rd position.

4th Position: The Natural Minor Sound

4th position is one of the most underrated positions on the harmonica. On a C harmonica, 4th position puts you in A minor. Unlike 3rd position, which often has a bluesy or modal flavour, 4th position gives you a more direct natural minor sound. It is not necessarily as expressive but you may find it easier.

5th Position: Exotic and Dramatic

5th position is less common, but it has a very distinctive sound.

It tends to feel mysterious, angular and a little exotic. On a C harmonica, you would be playing in E minor (your root note being 2 blow / 5 blow / 8 blow).

Common Features of Minor Key Harmonica Playing

Minor key harmonica opens up an entirely different emotional world on the instrument. Minor key harmonica often relies more heavily on:

  • melody

  • phrasing

  • space

  • dynamics

  • emotional tension

Compared with standard blues harp, minor playing can feel more subtle and expressive. A great way to get started in with easy harmonica tabs for minor key songs.

   -6      -7     7  -7  -6   -7 -6  6    -6

‘Neath the cover of October skies

   5   -6  -7       7      -7   -6     -7     -6   -6    5

And all the leaves on the trees are falling

-6   -7        7    -7  -6     -7  -6       6     -6

To the sound of the breezes that blow

-6     -7    7  -7  -6     -7     -6   6     -6     5

And I’m trying to please to the calling

-6    -7         7       -7       -6     -7     -6      6    -6

Of your heart strings that play soft and low

 -6    -7   7  -9   9   -9     8  -6      -7      7    -8     7      -8      8

And all the ni-i-ight’s magic seems to whisper and hush

  -6   -6  -6   -9  9  -9     8     -6

And all the so-o-oft moonlight

    -7      7     -8     7    -8       8

Seems to shine in your blush

-10 9   8   -10     8    7  -8     7     8     7  -8      7     8     7   -8    7     -6     -6

Walking in the Air (The Snowman)

Key: Dm (F harp in 4th position)

   5         -6     -6   6    6   5

We're walking in the air

  5         -6    -6   6    6     5      4    -4

We're floating in the moonlit sky

 -4    -5  -5      5    5  -4

The people far below

-3//   4      4  -3   -3  -3//

Are sleeping as we fly

  5     -6   -6    6  6      5

I'm holding very tight

 5     -6  -6  6     6   5     4         -4

I'm riding in the midnight blue

-4    -5   -5   5   5   -4

I'm finding I can fly

-3//   4    4  -3   -3  -3//

So high above with you

 -6   -6    6   6      5

On across the world

5     -6  -6  6   6   5     4         -4

The villages go by like dreams

-4    -5   -5    5     5    -4

The rivers and the hills

 -3//   4    4   -3     -3    -3//

The forests and the streams

-3///   -3//   -3     4   -4       5

Children gaze, open mouthed

5*   6   -6    5*   -4

Taken by surprise

-3/  4  -4    5    -5     6      5    -6    -6/     5

Nobody down below believes their eyes

   5        -6    -6   6    6   5

We're surfing in the air

  5           -6    -6       6    6     5    4    -4

We're swimming in the frozen sky

  -4        -5    -5   5   5  -4

We're drifting over ice-

-3//   4      4     -3   -3   -3//

-y mountains floating by

-3///  -3//  -3     4   -4       5

Suddenly swooping low

5*   6   -6    5*   -4

On an ocean deep

-3/   4    -4  -3/   5    -5   6     5    -6    -6/      5

Rousing up a mighty monster from his sleep

   5         -6     -6   6    6   5

We're walking in the air

  5         -6    -6    6    6     5      4     -4

We're dancing in the midnight sky

-4     -5  -5    5     5     -4

And everyone who sees

-3//    4    4  -3   -3  -3//

Us greets us as we fly

You Know I'm No Good by Amy Winehouse

Key: Dm (C harp in 3rd position)

  -4     5         -5      -5    -4   -4   5    -4      -3/

Meet you downstairs in the bar and hurt

-3//   -3//   -4/       5      5     -5      5      -4   -5

Your rolled-up sleeves in your skull t-shirt

 -4    -4       -4      5    -5   -5   -4 -4/ -4  5    -4   -3/

You say, "What did you do wi-i-ith him today?"

-3//   -3//   -4/   5     5   5  -5      5   -4   -5

And sniffed me out like I was Tanqueray

  -4         -4       -4   -4   4  -3/ -4 -4/ -4

'Cause you're my fella, my gu-u-uy

  5        5       5        5 -4   4    5

Hand me your Stella and fly

-5   -5    -5     -4  -5    -4   6  -5

By the time I'm out the do-or

  -5     5       5      5       5    5    -4  4   5  -4   5

You tear me down like Ro-o-ger Mo-o-re

4    -4   5    4    -4

I cheated myself

  4    -4     4*   -4     4

Like I knew I would

-3//  -5    -5   5 -4  -5   5   4  -3//

I        told you I-I was tro-ub-le

  -3     -4   -3     -3    -4     -4     4

You kno-ow that I'm no good
